The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SSVP) was first introduced in India by the French Missionaries at Pondicherry during the year 1852–53 as a non-aggregated Conference. The Society was officially established in India in 1863 when several Conferences in Bombay (now Mumbai) were aggregated and the Bombay Particular Council was instituted.
From then onwards, the Society steadily grew across the nation — spreading the Vincentian spirit of faith, love, and service to the poor and marginalized.
On 9th November 1953, the Superior Council of India was formally established and affiliated with the Council General International, Paris.
Later, on 6th August 1973, the Superior Council of India was renamed as the National Council of India (NCI) — representing the Society at the national level.
The Headquarters of the National Council of India is located in Mumbai, and the President’s Secretariat is presently at Chennai, Tamil Nadu, under the leadership of Bro. S. Jude Mangalraj, who assumed office as the 14th National President of India on 28th February 2021.
Today, the National Council of India coordinates and guides 84 Central Councils across the country.
Through these councils, the Society continues to expand its work in education, healthcare, disaster relief, women empowerment, rural development, and spiritual formation, ensuring the Vincentian mission reaches every corner of India.
