The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SSVP) is an international Christian lay organization inspired by the life and works of St. Vincent de Paul. It is dedicated to serving the poor, the suffering, and the marginalized through acts of faith, love, and compassion. The Society is open to all who seek to live their faith through service, regardless of caste, creed, or background.
At the Central Council of Vellore, we continue this mission within the Diocese of Vellore, working under the guidance of the National Council of India.
Our goal is to strengthen the Vincentian network by guiding Area Councils and local Conferences, organizing charitable initiatives, and promoting the values of Christian love, simplicity, and service.
To deepen the spiritual life of our members and serve Christ through personal contact with those in need bringing relief, hope, and dignity to the poor and vulnerable in our community.
We believe that true charity lies not in words but in action.
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul was founded in 1833 by Blessed Frederic Ozanam, a young law student in Paris, inspired by the example of St. Vincent de Paul.
Guided by Sister Rosalie Rendu, Frederic and his companions began visiting the poor in their homes, providing both material and spiritual assistance.
Their work quickly spread throughout the world — giving rise to a global movement of faith in action.
The Central Council of Vellore forms part of this national network, serving as the coordinating body for Conferences and Area Councils within the Diocese of Vellore.
Our mission is to guide, support, and inspire Vincentians across our region, ensuring that every act of charity reflects the love of Christ.
We organize:
Charitable outreach and social service programs
Training and faith formation for members
Community initiatives to uplift the poor and marginalized
